Does anyone have any *positive* experiences living in Miami?

Main Post:

I will be moving to Miami for a new job in a few months. I’ve done some reading about it here and it seems just about everyone has had mostly negative experiences with it. I do understand why - high living costs, traffic, heat, and of course the vanity... just to name a few things.

At the same time though, I am quite excited to move there. I am single and in my mid twenties, fairly social and enjoy being active as well so I think it can have a lot to offer for me. I know there is lots to do there and I’m hoping I can make the most of the time I’m there (don’t plan on staying there permanently).

Is there anyone who has lived there and not regretted it? Or dare I say, even loved Miami? I know this is a stretch but I’m curious to see what positives people have taken away from it, if any lol.

Top Comment: I loved living in Miami for 5 years. With enough money a lot of the problems are negated(not applicable to me at the time)

South Beach Miami FL - What a disappointment!

Main Post:

Save yourself the hassle and avoid South Beach Miami. The restaurants are way too expensive and the quality is just OK. While the beaches are nice, there are plenty of nice beaches on both east & west coast that are reasonably priced. Getting around South Beach was a big hassle. If you rent a car, you'll have no place to park it, and the valet fees will bankrupt you. And Uber & Lyft are no bargains either. We had one driver cancel our ride after we waited 30 min. Apparently the traffic was too much for the driver so he/she just cancelled the ride. Uber & Lyft drivers will not pickup on certain parts of Ocean Drive... and be prepared for 'surprise' surcharges on your Uber & Lyft rides during peak hours. Streets were pretty filthy, with lots of poverty. And the poverty is contrasted with the extreme wealth that folks go out of their way to display. Throw a rock in any direction and your bound to hit a Lamborghini, or some other exotic sports car... Folks in South Beach try way too hard to be relevant, posing everywhere they go, so they can post to their social media... more like "social disease". South Beach is definitely NOT for kids, and is not family friendly. On a positive note, SoBe is very LGTBQ friendly, but here again, much of that is not for kids. Can't say enough bad things about South Beach, not worth the trip... The local restaurants have strong-armed the local politicians in forbidding the sale of beer, wine, & liquor after 6 or 8 pm in the evening. If you want a beer after that time you'll have to go to a bar... What a racket... The whole place is arranged to fleece you... empty your wallet and leave you with bad memories... NOT WORTH THE TRIP...

Top Comment: Sounds like you visited during spring break where we’ve had long advertised restrictions, large crowds, street closures. Spring break in south beach has never been considered family friendly. Why would you even expect that?

Going to Miami Beach this week. It looks like rain the whole time. What activities should I do instead? So sad 😞

Main Post:

Hey all. So I haven’t taken a vacation in YEARS! Saved up for a week long trip to Miami. Need some beach. Literally all I want to do is lay on the beach and go in the ocean all day. Will the beach be completely closed if it’s raining? I’m ok swimming in the ocean in the rain. If not what else is there to do around south beach? I came to relax and do nothing and there is rain literally everyday and it’s too late to change my trip days 😭

Top Comment: Usually the rain only lasts for an hour or two, you will be fine! 🤗 the beach does not close, you can swim

What you guys think about Americans saying that Miami is the “Capital of Latin America”?

Main Post:

I know it’s mostly a joke, and being bothered by that is somewhat silly, but it eels in bad taste. I mean, it reminds me how they usually conflate the Latino diaspora culture in the US with some inexistent, generic, Latino American culture. It’s also in bad taste due to the problematic history the US have with Latin American countries.

Again, I know It’s silly, I even seen people jokingly saying it here, but sometimes it seems like they thinks it’s peak humor or something.
